Situationships: A Contemporary Painting Series Exploring the Tragedy of Modern Dating

Jey is a nonbinary designer and artist from Austin, Texas. Their work explores the concept of sexualization of the artist themself - if they can paint photorealistic work with light and shadow and color, then why are they regularly reduced to the physical pieces of themself used for sex instead of their raw talent. By painting their sexual nature they are taking back their sexuality from people who would use it against them. Jey sells their art in galleries across the US and local queer events in Austin. Jey paints the still small moments to express feelings they never could with words. Their work asks “what is sexuality in the absence of gender?” They are a mixed media artist, painting both digitally in the app ProCreate and physically using acrylics. Pieces from the situationships seies have been in seven galleries across the US this year.

Up in FLames: medusa and her lover, digital painting on canvas

A masked Medusa grips the artist around thei neck in a chokehold. No matter how the artist tries to escape, they are pulled back in. To see Medusa's true face would turn the lover to stone and yet the lover has to try. Flames engulf them, their passion and desire burning away the best parts of them. To stay together would kill them both, to see Medusa's true self would kill the lover. So for now, they stay burned.

Fishnets in blacklights, a leather body suit, and a night out getting over you fast. Juicy is about reclaiming sexuality after recovering from painful relationships. It features the outfit the artist wore on finding out their lover of over a year had actually belonged to someone else the entire time. It's about feeling sexual again when you have lost your lover's desire. The deep blues and purples contrast against the bright whites to show off the curves of the human form.

Bronze and blue shadows eclipse a figure with the last expression of lust dripping down their form. Painted to recover from everything deterorating all at once, while sobbing, listening to Cellophane by FKA Twigs. Because of the bronze acrylic used in the metallic shadows, the figure changes and the shadow appears to move with the angle of the light.
